OKP Life K5 Review – Robot Vacuum Under $100

By Tuan Do

In the expanding market of robot vacuum cleaners, finding a suitable one that balances affordability with advanced features is quite difficult. The OKP Life K5 Robot Vacuum is a compact contender in this competitive market. Without fancy features like LiDAR, advanced sensors, and AI object recognition, the OKP K5 is still an attractive option with the low price of under $100.

Unboxing and Design

The first impression of the OKP K5 comes from its surprisingly small packaging, hinting at the vacuum’s compact size. Measuring just 11″ in diameter, it’s notably smaller than its counterparts from Xiaomi and Yedi. However, its height of 3″ is on par with others, offering no significant size advantage except for its ability to maneuver in narrower spaces. Out of the box, it comes with extra side brushes, a replacement HEPA filter, and a cutting tool.

The build quality of the K5 is commendable, with a sturdy design that extends to both the robot and its docking station. Setup is straightforward, requiring minimal effort and technical know-how.

The absence of a camera, LiDAR, mechanical bumper, and other sensing features might initially raise doubts about its intelligence as a cleaning device. Thankfully, a quick test reveals that the OKP K5 is equipped with edge sensors to prevent falls and infrared proximity sensors to avoid obstacles, though it struggles with thinner obstructions like table legs.

Features and Performance

The K5 comes with dual sweeping brushes, enhancing its corner cleaning capabilities. However, the absence of a brush roll limits its effectiveness on rugs and carpets. Its small, easy-to-deploy base is a convenient feature, allowing more flexibility in positioning the charging dock.

In terms of cleaning performance, the OKP K5 offers about 100-110 minutes of runtime in standard mode. This translates to roughly 70-square-meter of cleaning on a single charge. The vacuum’s hard floor cleaning is pretty good, picking up a significant amount of debris and dog hair in my house. However, its performance on carpeted surfaces is less effective, struggling with certain types of debris due to the lack of brush roll.

Navigation is handled through a combination of FreeMove 3.0 technology and infrared sensors. While not as precise as LiDAR-based systems, it is sufficient for simple layouts and works well in dark conditions.

Maintenance of the K5 is straightforward. The 500ml dust container with a HEPA filter requires regular emptying and cleaning, and a replacement filter is included. The lack of a roller reduces the likelihood of tangled hairs, simplifying maintenance.

Smart Features and App Integration

The vacuum can be controlled via a simple, user-friendly app. It offers features like voice assistant integration, scheduling, and various cleaning modes. Interestingly, despite lacking optical sensors, the OKP K5 can map its environment based on its travel paths, a feature that adds to its smart capabilities. Unfortunately, the mapping feature doesn’t work well in my house because of different obstacles on the floor. For instance, the robot regularly climbs on my table legs, then it backs up and loses direction.

Conclusion

Pros

  • Easy to empty dust bin
  • Good at picking up hair from dogs
  • Easy to deploy base
  • Can do well on medium pile carpet, tile, and hard floor
  • Has adjustable suction
  • Low price

Cons

  • Lacks an advanced sensor
  • Not as impressive on carpet

Priced under $100 on Amazon, the OKP K5 presents a compelling value proposition, especially for those living in a simple room without carpets. Its performance on hard floors is pretty good, and it can handle occasional carpets if used regularly. For those seeking a more robust solution that can clean the whole house, it might be worth exploring other models.
