Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner Review - Full-Size Corded Vacuums Are Dead

Dyson has concentrated on cordless vacuums in the past few years and no other competitor could compete with them. With the release of Dyson Cyclone V10, they’re confident that it even spells the end for corded vacuums. We will no longer see full-size vacuum cleaners from Dyson since they will cease the production very soon. Founder James Dyson said that they will put R&D resources to cordless cleaners and the Dyson V10 is the reason for the decision.

Inside The Box

There is almost no surprise when I unboxed the product. The Dyson V10 Absolute comes with the same accessories as seen with the Dyson V8. Specifically, we have the vacuum body, an extension wand, a charger, a docking station, a torque-drive cleaner head, a soft roller cleaner head, a combination tool, a crevice tool, a mini soft dusting brush, and a mini-motorized tool. The good news is that all those accessories have the same connector as found in the previous generation Dyson V8, therefore, replacing the attachments is a lot easier. The only difference I can see is that the torque-drive cleaner head has a switch to change among 3 modes. You can choose the (+) mode for the maximum suction, the normal mode, or the (-) mode to pick up large debris. There are 2 gates on the front of the cleaner head, it will be wide opened when you switch to the (-) mode allowing large debris to be sucked in.

Design & Performance

Unlike the attachments, the main vacuum unit has been overhauled from the inside out. The steel spinning shaft is replaced by a ceramic one which is lighter and harder. I also made a simple test to see if the Dyson V10 motor’s suction is improved by 20% like the manufacturer claimed; The result is not surprising as the new V10 is the clear winner. The vacuum has 3 power modes and you will choose one depending on your situation. The 2nd power mode is good enough and I often set my vacuum in this mode when cleaning my laminate floor. I just switch to the Max mode when dealing with excessive dirt on carpets or upholstery.

The two attachments I use the most are the torque-drive cleaner head and the mini motorized tool. I prefer the torque-drive over the soft roller one when vacuuming hard floors since it is way more powerful, thanks to the stiff nylon bristles which can capture deep-down dirt. On the other hand, the mini motorized tool can effectively pick up fine dust from my sofa. Just look at the before and after images below, I was shocked at the amount of dust collected from my sofa.

As compared to the Dyson V8, the V10 is significantly bigger but the weight is almost the same. The dust bin’s capacity is expanded by 40% to hold more dust and enable better airflow. Emptying the dust bin is different with the point and shoot mechanism. I actually prefer the emptying mechanism on the V8 as I feel it is cleaner and easier, I even didn’t need to remove the attachment to empty dust on my old vacuum. However, the design is understandable since Dyson wants to make a straight-through air path from the cleaner head to the cyclones; This is also contributing to the better suction on this machine.

The battery of the Dyson V10 could last up to 60 minutes but it only happens when you use a non-motorized tool in the lowest power mode. When I use the torque-drive cleaner head, it lasts just about 20 minutes in the 2nd mode and less than 10 minutes in the max mode. Overall, the battery is good enough to clean my whole apartment. Besides, the vacuum is ready to use all the time, so I can just take it and clean something when necessary. The LED notification on the side will tell us the current battery level, moreover, it will also tell us when there is a blockage or when the rear filter needs to be washed.

I love the Dyson V8 and I love the V10 even more since it’s more powerful and we don’t lose the suction power over time. Undoubtedly, this is the best cordless stick vacuum on the market and the only downside is its high price tag.

The Dyson V10 Absolute is the top model in the V10 series so it has a price tag of nearly $700 at launch (update: the price has dropped below $500 as of 2019). You totally can buy the V10 Animal to save some money; It is the same vacuum except that there is no soft roller cleaner head which I hardly use. Besides, the Dyson V8 is also not a bad choice since it’s heavily discounted now.
