Qualcomm’s powerful new chip could debut in a phone that’s already on sale
In 2015, we’re probably going to see a lot of phones and tablets powered by the Snapdragon 810, processor giant Qualcomm’s next flagship system-on-chip. But the first device to come with it may surprise you.
Samsung has just announced it is to launch the “Samsung Galaxy Note 4 LTE-A”, a variant of the existing Galaxy Note 4 with a faster brand of 4G connectivity – and apparently a Snapdragon 810.
Samsung’s press release for the Note 4 LTE-A makes no specific mention of the 810, but it’s the only SoC capable of providing the particular connectivity the phone possesses: it’s capable of hitting 450Mbps on future networks and 300Mbps on current networks.
The 810 offers a number of advantages over existing Qualcomm SoCs: it’s faster and has better connectivity, and it’s 64-bit compatible, bringing Qualcomm’s chips into line with Apple’s.
The Galaxy Note 4 LTE-A is scheduled for launch in Samsung’s native South Korea, and seems unlikely to arrive in other countries. So the first UK-bound Qualcomm 810 phone may well be something brand new.
