T-Mobile announced today that it will begin selling the Nexus 5 online starting on Nov. 14 and in-stores and other retailers starting on Nov. 20. The device will cost $41.99 down with 24 monthly payments of $17.
That comes out to a total device cost of $449.99 and, while T-Mobile doesn’t distinguish how much storage it will cost, that’s a large markup from the cost that Google sells it for directly. The 16GB model from Google costs $349 and runs on T-Mobile’s LTE network, while the 32GB model costs $399. So, that said, T-Mobile is charging you anywhere from $50 to $100 more.
You can read our Nexus 5 review for more information, but in the meantime here’s a quick spec refresher: The Nexus 5 is the first device to run Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box, and also includes a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.26GHz, 2GB of RAM, a 5-inch 1080p display and an 8-megapixel camera.
At $349 unlocked, that’s a great price to specs ratio, if you want to buy it from Google. For $449 over the span of 24 months from T-Mobile, however, that value proposition dips off a bit. We recommend just buying the phone from Google Play outright and sticking a T-Mobile SIM card in there, but if you want to save a few pennies from the start, T-Mobile’s low down payment is a nice option.
