Differences between iPhone 6S Models (A1633, A1634, A1688, A1687, A1699, A1700, A1690, A1691)

By Tuan Do

As we all expect at this time every year, the new iPhones have arrived and again we get two new phones in 2015, the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus.

Both of the models features significant upgrades like 3D Touch, 12MP iSight camera, 4K video recording, faster CPU and GPU performance. The phones were launched with the 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB storage options but the 16GB and 64GB were discontinued and replaced by the 32GB option since 2016. You must be excited about the launch and want to get hands on the phone as soon as possible. However, you should be careful because your new iPhone might not be compatible with your carrier.

The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus come in 8 models, including A1633, A1634, A1687, A1688, A1699, A1700, A1690, and A1691, and they have different cellular connectivity. Fortunately, the number of model numbers is the same as iPhone 6 last year and Apple also covers 3 more LTE bands (23 as compared to 20 bands on iPhone 6). If you are on T-Mobile, you will see a boost in LTE signal, especially when you are inside buildings, because all new models include support for LTE band 12 (700MHz spectrum). AT&T customers will also notice a better experience as some models support the new LTE band 30. The new generation also features LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) which supports download speed of 300Mbps and Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE).

Now, let’s take a look at the different model numbers.

    Hi Tuan Do,
thank you for your wonderful article!
My question is: I live in the UK and my friend lives in Italy. We are both travelers and about to buy a 6S each (me 128GB, her 64GB). Given from what I have read that the A1633 is the ultimate global phone as it has the band 30, is it really worth having an American friend of mine buying both phones SIM-free in US?
Also because after the exchange rate they appear to be dramatically cheaper over there = £508 vs £614 (in UK) for the 64GB for example.
Also, how can I ensure they are going to be exactly UNLOCKED and SIM-free, and they are definitely A1633?
Online purchasing would be better as we would have the financing option.
    What do you recommend?
    Thank you very much!
    Alessio

Okay, so this has nothing to do with the models, but i forgot the password on my iphone 6s (for the 2nd time.) I was following the directions apple gave me to restore it (powering the iphone off and holdong the home button, etc.) and after several tries of restoring it, on the last time, i powered it off and now it wont turn back on. ive tried holding down the power button and the home button (at the same time and individually), and plugging it in to the computer that ive previously been using to restore it. Can someone please tell me how i can turn on my iphone so i can continue to restore it?? Anything would be very appreciated :)

I have a 6S model #A1688. (mKQN2ZD/A). Purchased in Germany and activating via Verizon in US. Everything is working accept Verizon for phone calls. I’ve been to Verizon for assisance twice and had 3 different SIM’s and still no phone. It shows activated on Verizon’s side. If phone sits dormant and I touch it, it shows Verizon in upper left for about 5-10 seconds than goes to no service. Any ideas on what to try next? Also worked with Apple and all good there.

Hi CStevenson – I have the exact same problem with the same model purchased in Australia with a Verizon SIM. It shows as activated, it will show Verizon initially, but then goes to no services. After many hours with Verizon (and Apple), Verizon maintain it is not CDMA compatible despite it being so in the specs and Apple US Stores maintain I need to go back to the reseller in Australia (I purchased it from the airport duty free). Did you end up getting yours working and, if so, would you mind sharing how? My only option right now seems to be to change carriers. Many thanks!

H20 Wireless uses ATT network. Anything supported by ATT will work on H20.
      Great service, BTW:

Hi I am currently on At&t and I bought an unlocked Verizon iPhone 6s (A1688). I was wondering is it compatible with China Mobile 4g network and is it ok if I activate it with my At&t sim card? Last time when I bought a Sprint iPhone 6s(A1688), I was told to activate it with a Chinese sim card. I did that and the phone worked perfectly in China but I’m not sure if it is the same case with Verizon?

Just bought an iPhone 6 Model A1633 unlocked from Apple store and have Sprint for network using LTE. Will I be able to use this phone in China for data and phone calls? It has a SIM card in it.

    Hey Tuan,

Can you please make an article for the iPhone 7 & 7 Plus as well. Which model for the 7 Plus will be a global or world phone?

I’ve been using A1633 for almost a year with Apple Upgrade Program, and since moving to Korea/Japan, I want to have A1688 model. Do yo think I can ask them to switch mine to A1688? Also, what’s your opinion toward the recent incident of iPhone Upgrade Program users suing Apple?

I was looking to switch my Verizon iPhone 6S and 6S Plus to Total Wireless, or Straight Talk at worst. The reps told me that my phones are not compatible to bring over. Which model should I get and will it work with LTE network?

Thanks in advance for the help. Your article was very informative.

Hello – Can you please help? My Granddaughter is over in the UK visiting me and her Grandmother for Christmas. It is soon to be her 21st birthday and we would like to buy her a new iPhone 7 as a 21st birthday present to take back with her to Australia. I would also purchase the Apple+ care when buying the phone.
However as it is such a lot of money I want to make sure that the phone would function correctly in Australia.
If you are able to advise I would be most grateful.
    Kind Regards

    keith Sayles.
