Differences between iPhone 6S Models (A1633, A1634, A1688, A1687, A1699, A1700, A1690, A1691)

By Tuan Do

As we all expect at this time every year, the new iPhones have arrived and again we get two new phones in 2015, the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus.

Both of the models features significant upgrades like 3D Touch, 12MP iSight camera, 4K video recording, faster CPU and GPU performance. The phones were launched with the 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB storage options but the 16GB and 64GB were discontinued and replaced by the 32GB option since 2016. You must be excited about the launch and want to get hands on the phone as soon as possible. However, you should be careful because your new iPhone might not be compatible with your carrier.

The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus come in 8 models, including A1633, A1634, A1687, A1688, A1699, A1700, A1690, and A1691, and they have different cellular connectivity. Fortunately, the number of model numbers is the same as iPhone 6 last year and Apple also covers 3 more LTE bands (23 as compared to 20 bands on iPhone 6). If you are on T-Mobile, you will see a boost in LTE signal, especially when you are inside buildings, because all new models include support for LTE band 12 (700MHz spectrum). AT&T customers will also notice a better experience as some models support the new LTE band 30. The new generation also features LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) which supports download speed of 300Mbps and Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE).

Now, let’s take a look at the different model numbers.

Hi, I’ve purchased an Apple iPhone 6s Plus A1687 from Apple Store UK unlocked.
The phone is brilliant apart from I cannot make calls from my house, after two weeks of complaining Apple agreed to exchange my iPhone 6s for another model. Unfortunately I still have the same problem, I cannot make calls from my house. However if I put a nano Sim into my galaxy note 4 it works perfectly.
My iPhone 6s Plus shows full service on 4g and I can send text messages and surf the Internet and download no problem but still cannot make calls.

Hi, I will be in Tokyo by mid November 2015 and would like to get the iPhone 6s, but I am not sure if it will be compatible in Argentina. My local carrier is Personal.
Also, I heard that in Japan iPhone have some features set by default that cannot be changed. For eg. the shooting sound of the camera cannot be muted. Is that true?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

I bought an iPhone 6s through Apple using the iPhone Upgrade Program. It’s the model A1688 and I signed up with T-Mobile after having been on Verizon for several years (mainly because of T-Mobile’s “Music Freedom”). However T-Mobile’s LTE signal is not as strong as Verizon’s was inside the building I work in. If I decide to switch back to Verizon, can I still use the same phone?

    Hi Tuan,

I just had a friend purchase a 6s Plus in the USA for me (I live in Hong Kong). It’s the A1634 – I believe (hope) AT&T unlocked version. I notice above that you mention it supports GSM and CDMA, but you state that the A1687 is the “global” model – which is also GSM/CDMA compatible. Is the A1634 less functional around the world? I travel a lot…are there any major countries where I might have problems using this particular model? Thanks.

    • Tuan Do says

      Nov 7, 2015 at 11:18 am

      No, Kylie
That’s the most versatile version and the best iPhone for travellers. Apple is selling it as unlocked version in the US. I hope you friend didn’t buy the locked AT&T phone.

Sir ! I have a question with my scenario, I bought 2 model as A1688 and A1687 in Vietnam from my relative. She said that both of these are World Models. However, when I open the phone for activate, I see the verzion sim card inside sim case. then she said insert your sim card first (Vietnam mobifone sim) and take the verzion sim out. If I dont do that and go activate directly with verzion sim, then the phone will be locked forever. My question is, if I activate the phone with my sim card first, then is it becoming world phone forever?, or in case if I put the verzion sim back to phone, will it getting locked ?

Please advise which carrier is best for the iPhone 6s plus 64gig. I am currently with sprint and am considering switching to verizon. The phone will be used in the U.S. And Israel. Will the Verizon phone be compatible with Orange in Israel? Many thanks

This is a p.s to the abcve post. Would i be safe purchasing the Verizon version vs the Apple version as I understand the GSM is unlocked..is the cdma also unlocked for other carriers? Reason for the questions…I have never had an iPhone, and with sprint using an htc with an Israeli sim worked, with my LG G3 i had problems with calls and data and the phone was unlocked. Many thanks

Hi Tuan, I wish I’d found you sooner. I am leaving for India in a week and a friend wants an unlocked 64gb 6s iPhone. His carrier is Airtel and from what I’ve read the A1688 is the best for him. I tried to buy one at T-Mobile (my carrier for many years in US) but was told I would have to own it for a while before they would unlock it! T-Mobile sent me to Retech but they would have to wait up to 8 days for the unlock code and charge an extra $90 to do it so that wouldn’t work. Both also said that they had to be returned within 14 days if it didn’t work or I was dissatisfied with it. But I will be gone over 24 days so that was a problem. I was also about getting through customs in India and be held up and charged up to $200 import fee. Is this true? I think my last resort is to try to see if my local Apple store has it unlocked. I hate to fail a friend but this is an expensive proposition and at best I think I could be out $800 or more. Thank you for any help.

I want to buy A 1634 (SIM free) i phone and have it set up with Verison (in US). What will I need to do when I go in vacation to India? Do I have to buy/contract anything in India? Last time in India I wasted 1/2 day buying/installing SIM there…..

    Hi Tuan!
I have a question. I just bought one A1633 at Walmart. Do you know if I can bring the phone to Vietnam and use? I paid full price and I am not sure which carrier it is. Your explaination would help so much. Thanks.

Trying to buy the unlocked version of the iPhone 6s/6s Plus. I travel quite often mostly to China and Hong Kong. However ATT is my service provider in the U.S. I would like to take advantage of the new LTE band 30. Please advice which model/version suits me best. And if I opt for the global version A1687/A1688. How much am I missing out on the LTE band 30 network and how big of a difference are we talking about?
    Thank you!
